Biography
Victor Lindelöf was a composed, ball-playing Swedish defender known for his intelligence, positional awareness, and calmness under pressure. Nicknamed The Iceman for his cool temperament, he became a key figure in Manchester United’s backline during his eight-year stay at Old Trafford. Having joined from Portuguese giants Benfica in 2017, Lindelöf made 284 appearances for United, while also captaining the Swedish national team.

Early Life and Youth Career
Born in Västerås, Sweden, Lindelöf began his footballing journey with local clubs IK Franke and Västerås IK before settling at Västerås SK. He made his senior debut for Västerås SK in 2009 at the age of just 15. His early performances in Sweden’s lower leagues earned him a move to Portuguese powerhouse Benfica in 2012, where he initially featured for their B team in the Segunda Liga.

Benfica Breakthrough (2012–2017)
Lindelöf rose quickly through the ranks at Benfica, impressing with his composed style and tactical discipline. He made his senior debut in 2013 but became a regular in 2015–16. Between 2013 and 2017, he helped Benfica win three consecutive Primeira Liga titles, one Taça de Portugal, and a Taça da Liga. His performances earned widespread praise and caught the eye of major European clubs.

He also played a vital role for Sweden U21s in the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, helping his nation win the tournament and earning a place in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.

Manchester United Career (2017–2025)
Victor Lindelöf signed for Manchester United in June 2017 under manager José Mourinho for a reported fee of £31 million, potentially rising to £35 million with add-ons.

2017–18: Settling In
Lindelöf made his competitive debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid in August 2017. His early months at Old Trafford were inconsistent as he adjusted to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. However, he began to settle into the side and made 29 appearances in his debut season.

2018–2020: Growing Influence
Under Mourinho and later Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Lindelöf formed a regular central defensive partnership, often alongside Chris Smalling and later Harry Maguire. He scored his first goal for United in January 2019 in a dramatic 2–2 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford.

By 2018–19, he had developed into one of United’s most reliable defenders, earning praise for his composure and distribution. He was named in UEFA’s Europa League Squad of the Season in 2019–20 as United reached the semi-finals.

2020–2023: Solid Contributor in a Changing Defence
Though often rotated due to the arrivals of defenders like Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez, Lindelöf remained a key squad member. He made significant contributions in domestic and European competitions and was part of the squad that won the 2022–23 EFL Cup, ending United’s six-year trophy drought.

He also helped United win the FA Cup in 2023–24, as a late sub replacing Alejandro Garnacho on 90'+3 against Manchester City.

2024–25: Final Season and Departure
Victor Lindelöf’s contract ran until June 2025, and despite discussions, United confirmed he would not be retained beyond the season. He made his final appearance in the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final, where United were narrowly beaten. He departed the club with 285 total appearances, 4 goals, and a reputation as a loyal and intelligent defender.

Sweden National Team Career
Lindelöf made his senior debut for Sweden in March 2016, after excelling at youth level. He featured prominently in UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup (where Sweden reached the quarter-finals), and UEFA Euro 2020.

In August 2021, he was named Sweden captain. As of June 2025, Lindelöf has earned over 70 international caps and continues to be a cornerstone of the Swedish defence.

His quiet leadership, tactical discipline, and composure make him ideal for possession-based systems and high defensive lines.

Personal Life
Victor Lindelöf married long-time partner Maja Nilsson in 2018. The couple have two children together. Off the pitch, Lindelöf is known for his reserved nature and dedication to family life. In 2020, he was hailed a hero in Sweden after stopping a bag thief and waiting with the victim until police arrived.
