George Perrins was only 18 years old when he was signed by namesakes Birmingham St. George's at the start of 1891-92. He was handed his debut against Newton Heath, singularly, on September 26th, 1891. It was a dirty battle in which his teammate Thorp was sent off for retaliating against Jack Doughty, while the fans resorted to "foul language with ladies present"! George played in 10 Football Alliance fixtures that season but lost eight of them as his team finished bottom and disbanded shortly after.
Nonetheless, his form impressed the Heathens who promptly snapped him up as they entered into the Football League. For three seasons, the 5'9" and 11-stone Perrins was a fixture at right-half. He was fast and forceful and loved the rough stuff, though he could get into trouble for various reasons. Back in November 1891, he was suspended for one week for having turned out illegally for St. George's. Then in December 1892, he was fined 10 shillings when, with Heathen teammate Jimmy Warner, he roughed up a man while on a night out. And, finally, in October 1893, George was one of three Heathens banned for 14 days for excessive brutality in a league tussle with Derby County!
Perrins' form dropped alarmingly in 1895-96 costing him a regular place in the lineup. Indeed, towards the end of the season, the only way he could get in the team was as emergency goalkeeper! Twice he minded the sticks, Burton Wanderers being the opponents - and victors - on both occasions.
In August 1896, Perrins transferred to Luton Town to join an enclave of ex-Newton Heath stalwarts. Though he instantly helped the Hatters into the Second Division of the Football League, he lost his place in 1897-98, playing in a mere six league outings, much to the disbelief of both the fans and local media. Accordingly, he headed back into the Southern League in May 1898, joining Chatham Town.
Midway through 1900-01, Chatham resigned from the league leaving Perrins to seek new employment with Stockport County that summer. He made his bow for County on September 7th, 1901, against Middlesbrough then proceeded to play 32 league and cup matches during that campaign. This proved to be George's last year in first-class football. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
