John Ball is one of those rare United players who played for the club across two spells, between 1929-1930 & 1932-1935 it all began when he was transferred from Chorley, 06/05/1929 after the forward had registered 58 goals in a single season of Lancashire Combination football, those goals leading to Manchester United chasing his signature. John in his 1st year made 24 appearance scoring 11 goals before moving clubs making his name more at Sheffield than Manchester with the Wednesday. John managed a quite remarkable hoard of 94 domestic goals while with the Owls during his 3 and a half seasons before returning to the Reds in December 1933 in a swap deal including United's Neil Dewar going to Hillsborough.

Jack during his career also managed to play in all three league divisions during September & October 1934. managing only another 26 appearances and 7 goals, John found himself transferred to Huddersfield Town in September of 1934, after an extremely short stay he moved to Luton Town.

After finishing and hanging up his boots, He had a short spell in France as a coach with Excelsior Roubaix and also managed St Albans City and Biggleswade Town after World War Two.
