Herbert Bamlett was an English football manager, best known for his tenure at Manchester United during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Bamlett’s managerial career is particularly noted for the challenges he faced during one of the most difficult periods in Manchester United’s history, marked by financial instability and struggles on the field. Despite his previous managerial success with other clubs, his time at Manchester United is remembered for the club’s decline and eventual relegation from the First Division.

Early Career and Managerial Success

Before managing Manchester United, Bamlett had spells at several clubs, including Middlesbrough, Oldham Athletic, and Wigan Borough. He began his managerial career after retiring as a football referee, during which he famously abandoned an FA Cup match in 1909 between Manchester United and Burnley due to snowy conditions, a decision that inadvertently helped United as they went on to win the replay and eventually the FA Cup that year.

Bamlett’s early success as a manager included a strong stint at Oldham Athletic, where he helped them gain promotion to the First Division. His achievements at other clubs earned him a reputation as a capable manager, leading to his appointment at Manchester United in 1927.

Herbert Bamlett at Manchester United (1927–1931)

Herbert Bamlett took over as Manchester United’s manager in April 1927, inheriting a team in a precarious position. The club was struggling financially, and the squad lacked the depth and quality needed to compete at the highest level. Bamlett attempted to steady the ship, but his time at United was marked by disappointing performances, relegation battles, and a lack of investment in new players due to the club’s financial constraints.

During Bamlett’s tenure, Manchester United consistently finished in the lower half of the First Division, and by the 1930-31 season, the club was relegated to the Second Division after finishing last. This relegation marked one of the lowest points in Manchester United’s history.

Bamlett’s managerial style was characterized by his hands-off approach, allowing the players to express themselves, but this often led to inconsistency on the pitch. Despite his efforts, he was unable to turn around the fortunes of the club, and in 1931, after a string of poor results, he resigned.

Challenges and Legacy

Herbert Bamlett’s time at Manchester United coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s history. The financial difficulties the club faced made it difficult for him to build a competitive team, and his lack of success led to his departure. However, his story is an important part of Manchester United’s history, as it represents the struggles the club went through before its eventual rise to greatness in later decades.

Bamlett’s legacy at Manchester United serves as a reminder of the club’s early challenges and its ability to bounce back from adversity. While his tenure ended in relegation, it helped set the stage for future managerial changes and the eventual rebuilding of the club.
