Biography
Jadon Sancho (born 25 March 2000 in Camberwell, London) is an English winger renowned for his exceptional dribbling ability, creativity, close control and flair. Comfortable playing on either wing, Sancho emerged as one of Europe's brightest young talents before earning a high-profile move to Manchester United in 2021.
Sancho began his football journey with the youth academy at Watford F.C. before joining Manchester City F.C. in 2015. Believing his pathway to first-team football would be quicker elsewhere, he made the bold decision to leave England in 2017 and sign for Borussia Dortmund.
The move proved inspired. At Dortmund, Sancho rapidly developed into one of the Bundesliga's standout attacking players. His pace, vision and ability to both score and create goals made him one of the most sought-after young footballers in Europe. During his first spell in Germany he scored 50 goals and provided more than 60 assists in all competitions, helping Dortmund win the DFL-Supercup in 2019 while earning numerous individual accolades.
After several years of speculation linking him with England's biggest clubs, Manchester United completed his signing in July 2021 in a deal worth around £73 million. Expectations were understandably high, with supporters hoping Sancho would become a key figure in the club's rebuilding process.
His time at Old Trafford, however, proved frustrating. Although he produced flashes of the quality that had made him a star in Germany, consistency proved elusive. Across five seasons as a United player he made 83 first-team appearances, scoring 12 goals while contributing several important assists in domestic and European competitions.
One of the defining moments of his United career came during the 2023–24 season when a public disagreement with manager Erik ten Hag resulted in Sancho being left out of the first-team squad. Following the dispute he returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan, where he rediscovered much of his confidence and helped the German side reach the 2024 UEFA Champions League Final.
Sancho then spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Chelsea F.C., contributing goals and assists as Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League Final. Chelsea ultimately chose not to make the move permanent, paying a contractual penalty instead. He followed that with another loan spell at Aston Villa F.C. during the 2025–26 campaign, adding further top-level experience while featuring in another European campaign.
Internationally, Sancho represented England at every major youth level and starred in the victorious England squad that won the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. His performances earned promotion to the senior England team, where he became a regular squad member and represented his country at major tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2020.
As of 30 June 2026, Sancho's contract with Manchester United has expired, making him a free agent and free to negotiate with clubs around the world. His departure brought an end to a five-year association with the club, with United officially confirming that he would leave upon the expiry of his contract.
