From the day he made his Newton Heath debut as a fullback against Lincoln City on November 16th, 1895, Jimmy Collinson was a favourite with the Bank Street masses. It helped that he was the earliest local lad to play regularly for the club in the Football League and that he grabbed a late goal to bring the final score to an incredulous 5-5!
Jimmy remained in the team for most of 1895-96 thereafter, until Harry Stafford arrived from Crewe in March. The youngster would then be confined to the reserve side until January 1898, by which time he had reinvented himself as an inside-right. Suddenly the ex-fullback was a regular scorer, and he amassed 14 goals in 23 matches of all manner by the end of the season.
He really came into his own in that year's Lancashire Senior Cup, scoring the only goal of the game against Manchester City in Round Two, bagging a brace in the semi-final versus Bolton, and getting both goals as Blackburn Rovers were defeated 2-1 in the final for Newton Heath's greatest feat.
Collinson again reached double figures for scoring in 1898-99 but, in the next two seasons, he became a utility player dividing his 30 appearances over 8 different positions. He also spent as much time with the second string that it came as no surprise that he left the club in the 1901 close season, hooking up with Stalybridge Rovers in October. He spent three years with them, the highlight coming in October 1903 when he found the net with a long range free kick. Collinson frequently demonstrated his versatility with Rovers as, not only was he able to operate in any outfield position, he also fancied he "could do as well as here and there an odd 'un" between the sticks!
Later Jimmy concentrated on his job as a glass blower, which he performed for decades afterwards. Sadly, when he lost his job because of illness in March 1940, an aging Jimmy took his own life at his home on Seabrook Road, Newton Heath. In a farewell note to his children he wrote: "Before I am any incumbrance to anyone I think this is the best step to take. Goodbye and God bless you all".
