David Bain was a Scottish footballer known for his versatility, playing both as a forward and later as a centre-half. Born in Rutherglen, Scotland, he began his football journey with local club Rutherglen Glencairn. In April 1922, Bain earned a cap for the Scotland Junior national team, highlighting his early promise.

In May 1922, at the age of 21, Bain signed with Manchester United, then competing in England's Second Division. He made his debut on October 14, 1922, in a match against Port Vale. During his tenure with United, Bain made 22 league appearances and scored 9 goals, including 8 goals in 18 matches during the 1923–24 season.

Bain's impressive performance caught the attention of Everton, leading to his transfer in July 1924 for a fee of £1,000. At Everton, he transitioned from a forward to a centre-half, making 38 league appearances and scoring 3 goals over four seasons. He was part of the squad that won the First Division title in the 1927–28 season, although he featured only twice that season.

In November 1928, Bain joined Bristol City, where he made 50 league appearances and scored 2 goals over two seasons. He continued his career with Halifax Town (1930–1932), making 60 league appearances and scoring 5 goals, and Rochdale (1932–1934), with 52 league appearances and 5 goals.

Bain's older brother, Jimmy Bain, was also a professional footballer who played for Manchester United. Although both were at the club simultaneously for two years, they never appeared together in a competitive fixture.

In 1927, Bain married a Welsh woman in Bootle, and they had two sons. From 1948, the family resided in Mather Avenue, Allerton, Liverpool. David Bain passed away on February 22, 1966, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated and adaptable footballer who contributed significantly to several English clubs during his career.
