James Peters was working at the Halliwell Mill when Newton Heath's delegation, consisting of Secretary Albut and Director Jones, approached him. The Heywood Central left winger was offered a contract, he signed it right then and there, and the three men promptly celebrated the deal by drinking in earnest. In all the merriment, James even recommended his strike partner Dick Smith, and he was signed too!
Peters arrived at Bank Street in the summer of 1894 when the only means of washing at the ground was a tub of cold water outside a wooden hut. The surrounding area was well stocked with smoke-belching chimneys and, generally, the number of chimneys that were cranked up during Heath's home matches was directly proportional to the quality of the opposition - mighty Scottish outfit Queen's Park played there a few months earlier and the pipes were turned on wholesale!
Not that Peters seemed to mind. He was acquired to replace Jack Peden and he replaced him fully: the newcomer appeared in all 30 league matches, thus becoming - along with goalkeeper Douglas - the first ever-present in Manchester United's history. The 1894-95 season was special for another reason: the team scored goals at a rate of 2.76 a game - the highest in their history. Peters was one of the players who reached double figures for scoring.
Although his fortunes dipped in 1895-96, James still enjoyed a special afternoon on November 2nd when he claimed a hat-trick against Liverpool in a 5-2 thrashing. He remained a prominent member of the attack until losing his place to James Vance in Spring. He thus left the Heathens in the close season to shack up with New Brompton (now Gillingham).
Peters missed only one game out of 20 in the Southern League in 1896-97, netting four goals. However, he was on the move again in 1897, joining Sheppey United, at the time another Division One outfit in the Southern League. He spent two years at that club then left them in the 1899 close season. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
