On the one hand, Jimmy Warner was good enough to be both Aston Villa and Manchester United's first ever Football League goalkeeper. On the other, he was a magnet for trouble and enough off-the-field drama to wither his career away.
It all began at Villa whom he joined following youthful spells with Hampton Road School and Milton FC. His debut for the Villains was against Vale of Leven in the pre-League days of 1886, then he became the main custodian in their first four League campaigns, minding the sticks in 75 out of 92 fixtures. Jimmy was selected for the Birmingham XI to face their Lancashire equivalents in March 1890.
However, it was the FA Cup that brought him his highlight, specifically when he earned a winners' medal in 1887. The old cup brought his downfall too: when Villa lost 0-3 to rivals WBA in the 1892 final, Warner was undeservedly made a scapegoat by the irate fans, who claimed he had bet on his team to lose. They even showed up at his day job at the Old College pub to give him grief. Under unenviable stress, he took off one day without notice, forcing the landlord to issue a warrant for his arrest! This was withdrawn once it was apparent Jimmy had not stolen the pub's earnings, but life at Villa was now over.
When Villa official, Alf Albut, gave up on a career as a commercial traveler to become Newton Heath's secretary in the summer of 1892, about the first thing he did was go back to his old club and sign Jimmy. He thus made his debut in the Heathens' inaugural Football League game, versus Blackburn Rovers on September 3rd, 1892. Jimmy's experience proved invaluable in the first few months of the season, and he even captained the team on the odd occasion.
Of course, mind, he soon got in trouble. Firstly, on an evening out with teammate George Perrins on Market Street on December 12th, Jimmy assaulted a man and punched him to the ground. The court fined him £40 plus costs. Then, on January 7th, 1893, he contrived to miss the train taking him and the Heath management to an away game at Stoke. After the ten men lost 1-7, the irate officials sacked their goalie. What made this decision more absurd was that Jimmy was the captain and, in that capacity, he had hosted the club's holiday party at his house just four days earlier, entertaining the whole staff and the officials! Though he returned for an FA Cup tie with Blackburn and two more league fixtures, his North Road career was now over as well.
Warner dropped a division next, hooking up with Walsall where he also took over the license of the Royal Exchange pub. However, his time with the Saddlers - and his footballing career - came to an end after a dozen games when he shipped eight goals at Burton United in February 1894. Jimmy at length travelled to America in 1907 where he became a well-known boxing promoter until retirement in the 1930s. He eventually passed away in a hospital in Pittsburgh in November 1943 after falling down the stairs and fracturing his thigh. James once missed his train to a game against Stoke in January 1893, Heath were soundly beaten 7-1 & later he was suspended, William Stewart kept goal that day.
