Biography
Youri Tielemans became a Manchester United player in the summer of 2026, arriving from Aston Villa after the club activated the release clause in his contract. The Belgium international joined Old Trafford with a reputation as one of the Premier League's most accomplished midfielders, bringing a wealth of experience, technical quality and leadership to Michael Carrick's evolving squad. The transfer represented a shift in United's recruitment strategy, prioritising proven top-flight performers capable of making an immediate impact.
Born on 7 May 1997 in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Belgium, Tielemans developed into one of Europe's brightest young prospects while progressing through the youth academy at Anderlecht. He made his senior debut in 2013 at just 16 years of age, becoming the youngest player to represent the club in the Belgian Pro League. Comfortable with either foot, his intelligence in possession, excellent passing range and ability to dictate the tempo of matches quickly established him as one of Belgium's finest emerging midfielders.
Tielemans enjoyed a remarkable rise with Anderlecht, making well over 180 first-team appearances before his twentieth birthday. During his time in Brussels he won multiple Belgian league titles and domestic honours while gaining invaluable UEFA Champions League and Europa League experience. His performances earned widespread recognition across Europe and established him as a regular in Belgium's international setup.
In January 2017 he secured a move to French side Monaco, where he further developed his tactical understanding and technical game in Ligue 1. Although his spell in France contained periods of inconsistency, he continued to demonstrate his outstanding passing ability and eye for goal, particularly from long range.
A loan move to Leicester City in January 2019 proved the turning point of his career. His performances were so impressive that Leicester made the transfer permanent later that year. Tielemans became one of the Premier League's finest midfielders, combining creativity with intelligence, composure and an exceptional work rate. His finest moment arrived in May 2021 when he scored one of the greatest goals in FA Cup Final history, a stunning long-range strike that secured Leicester City's first-ever FA Cup triumph against Chelsea at Wembley.
His success continued with victory in the 2021 FA Community Shield before he established himself as Leicester's midfield leader. Despite the club's eventual relegation in 2023, Tielemans' individual performances remained consistently impressive and attracted interest from several leading clubs.
Following Leicester's relegation, Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer. Under Unai Emery he became a key figure in Villa's resurgence, helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League before playing an influential role in their Europa League-winning campaign. His ability to control matches, contribute goals and provide leadership made him one of Villa's most important players and one of the Premier League's standout midfielders.
Internationally, Tielemans has represented Belgium at every youth level before becoming a senior international while still a teenager. He has accumulated more than 90 caps and featured at UEFA European Championships and FIFA World Cups, regularly serving as one of Belgium's most dependable midfielders. His leadership qualities saw him captain his country on numerous occasions, further underlining the respect he commands within the game.
Manchester United completed his signing in July 2026 after triggering a release clause worth approximately £35–36 million. He signed a five-year contract, with the club citing his consistency, composure, creativity and leadership as major reasons for the acquisition. Tielemans arrived to strengthen United's midfield alongside fellow summer recruit Andrey Santos as Carrick sought to build a side capable of challenging for the Premier League and Champions League.
A technically gifted central midfielder, Tielemans is renowned for his superb passing range, vision, positional awareness and ability to score spectacular goals from outside the penalty area. Equally comfortable operating as a deep-lying playmaker or in a more advanced midfield role, his calmness under pressure and wealth of experience make him one of the most accomplished midfielders to represent Manchester United in the modern era.
