Biography
Newton Heath's first ever tour of Scotland took place around New Year 1894. In the third and final game - against King's Park, on January 2nd - the First Division side fielded two unfamiliar names in the front line: Docherty and Macready. A few days later, it was announced that Heath had signed two Scottish players called Sam Parker and John Clarkin.
Parker - aka "Docherty" - was obtained from Hurlford FC and came with a fine reputation and the ability to operate both as an inside or centre-forward. From his League debut - versus Sheffield Wednesday on January 13th - until the end of the season, he was nearly always present in the attack. The only problem was he did not score much for an attacker. In fact, Sam hit the net just once in 18 matches, and that was only in a Palatine League fixture. Not surprisingly, he was banished to the reserves in 1894-95 as Heath dropped to the Second Division.
What was surprising was that Parker was able to find his way back into the top flight in October 1894 with Burnley. He even impressed the local press: "Very few players who have come to Burnley have made a better show on making their bow at Turf Moor". By February 1895, however, Sam was making another bow, this time for Southport Central against Chester in the Lancashire League.
The downward spiral continued in the summer of 1895 with Parker returning to his roots to play for Hurlford again. He served them for three years and the last he was heard of, he had moved to another junior Scottish team, Kilmarnock Athletic, in September 1898. No picture available.
