An engine fitter by trade, Arthur Henrys first emerged in footballing circles in Nottingham where he trotted out at various times for Notts Rovers, Notts St. John's, Nottingham Jardines and, not to be left out, Nottingham Forest. He finally sampled something different in 1890-91 when he hooked up with Gainsborough Trinity, who participated in the Midland League at the time. The left-footed Henrys generally operated at left-half but would often appear on the left flank and chip in with the odd goal. In March 1891, he played in the Lincolnshire Cup final when Trinity lost by one goal to Lincoln City.
Newton Heath signed Arthur for the 1891-92 season, and he was "the pick of the home team" on his debut in a friendly versus Burslem Port Vale on September 1st. He pleased the home crowd with his prominent kicking and "good dodging"! Henrys went on to play in 20 of the 22 Football Alliance games that season as Heath finished runners-up, and he tallied a remarkable 48 appearances in all.
An impressive feature was his versatility - Arthur popped up in seven different positions spread out all over the pitch. He even played up front and notched a goal, only that FA Cup tie was downgraded to a friendly when Heywood scratched.
As the Heathens headed to the First Division of the Football League, Henrys decided to head back to Notts Jardines, along with teammate Alf Edge. This move, however, was brought to a halt by the FA who ruled that it contravened the rules because it was orchestrated during the playing season. The duo were suspended until the end of October while Jardines' secretary was accused of lying and consequently banned indefinitely from management! Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
