After serving Greater Manchester sides Denton and Hurst, John Davies moved to Burslem Port Vale for the start of 1889-90. The paper described the new goalkeeper as "very strong and active; decidedly plucky". He capped his first year by becoming the first player in the club's history to be sent off! This happened for retaliating against a Walsall Town Swifts opponent who kicked him in May 1890.
In nearly three years with Port Vale, Davies amassed 75 games, mostly in the Midland League but also in friendlies and local cup competitions. In the Spring of 1892, however, he returned to Manchester and joined Newton Heath, then in the Football Alliance. When Heath dropped regular custodian Slater, John replaced him for the last three Alliance outings. His debut was against Grimsby Town on March 26th when he let in 3 goals, the first a long dropping ball that he entirely misjudged!
In 1892, as Heath entered the First Division of the Football League, Davies found himself behind new signing Jimmy Warner. The latter, though, was also dropped in January 1893 for missing a train to an away game at Stoke. John again came in from the cold and played seven top flight tussles, conceding 19 goals! Still, he had reasons to celebrate, first for winning a Manchester Senior Cup medal on April 15th, then for helping the Heathens avoid the drop when they defeated Small Heath in the relegation test matches the following week and, finally, for representing the Lancashire Combination XI against the North-East Lancashire League in the same busy month.
Unluckily for Davies, the management were still not convinced by his ability, and they signed yet another keeper for 1893-94 - Joe Fall. Davies stuck around at the club until late November, almost always present in the reserve team's lineup, but disappeared from Bank Street after that. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
