Adam Carson was considered one of the better inside-forwards north of the border. He represented Glasgow against a Sheffield XI in 1888, for instance, as well as the Scottish League against its Alliance equivalent four years later.
He had been with Cowlairs from 1886, eventually spending three years at Glasgow Thistle, from 1889-90 to 1891-92. He got in trouble in December 1891, however, his crime being... professionalism! Apparently Adam had moved south to Manchester and played a friendly for City (then known as Ardwick) earlier in September. They had paid him £10 with a promise of more. It did not materialize and he returned to Scotland where he decided to play in a cup tie for his first club, Cowlairs, who were still amateurs. This was considered illegal by the Scottish FA who banned him for one year from playing in Scotland.
This ban was soon rescinded, apparently, for Carson was spotted in Glasgow Thistle's colours in early 1892, eventually heading back to Manchester that summer but, this time, to join Newton Heath. He was actually present in the club's first-ever Football League outing - against Blackburn Rovers - and the next 11 as well. Alas, most of these games yielded defeats and, coupled with the main gripe against Carson - that he was selfish in possession - he soon lost his first team place in November.
For the next few months, Adam had to settle for reserve team football, and he was actually one of the side's leading scorers. Then, in March 1893, he finally joined Ardwick for good, making a scoring debut against Sheffield United. He played in nine consecutive game for his new club, stretching into 1893-94, but again found himself in the reserves for the last part of the campaign.
Thereafter, Carson continued a nomadic career. He signed for Fairfield in December 1893 where he spent a couple of seasons. Next he joined Stockport County but could only get one Lancashire League match with them. Finally, he joined Berry's Association FC for the 1897-98 campaign.
