On two consecutive weekends in October 1899, Peter Blackmore reveled in Newton Heath's front line. Having been signed from Ross Place OB, he impressed during a Lancashire Combination outing with the reserves against Everton on October 10th. So, he was given Jimmy Collinson's centre-forward slot on the 21st to face New Brighton Tower. The diminutive yet plucky Peter started well and helped create the first of Joe Cassidy's two goals in a 2-1 triumph.
Blackmore - who had first learned to play football at a Manchester Board school - was retained in the lineup the following Saturday, an important FA Cup tie at South Shore. Unfortunately, he could not maintain his standards in a 1-3 loss, being described as 'too light'. Moreover, especially considering his relative inexperience, he demanded what was described as 'exorbitant' terms. Unsurprisingly, the club did not retain him thereafter.
Peter went on to live at 16 Linwood Grove in Longsight and ran a fish and chips shop. He died suddenly in hospital at 58 in September 1937 and was interred at Gorton Cemetery. Peter was one of 7 Children - No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
