Alfred Ambler was a 5'8" much travelled player. As a youngster he played for Hawktown Juniors, helping them win a couple of trophies in the Manchester district. He then played for Hyde United before arriving at Bank Street as a forward in the Spring of 1899.
After he scored for the reserves against Fairfield, Alfred was given a run out in the first team on March 11th in a 2-0 friendly win over WBA when three members of the front line were suspended by the club. It was not until the opening day of 1899-00 that he made his competitive debut against Gainsborough Trinity then scored in the next match versus Bolton.
Thereafter, he was switched into a half-back and found himself swapping first-team and reserve team football continuously until the end of 1900-01. He started 1901-02 with non-league Stalybridge Rovers and finished it with Rochdale Town.
Ambler's next stop was at Colne whom he helped win the Lancashire Combination Division Two title in 1905-06 and the Lancashire Junior Cup. This attracted the attention of Stockport County who brought him back into the Football League and gave him his debut against Wolves on Boxing Day 1906. He played 27 league and cup games for County over two seasons, in addition to 14 reserve outings, before joining Exeter City in time for their inaugural Southern League fixture in 1908.
56 appearances later, the powerfully built 12-stone Alfred returned to Colne in June 1910 but left them long before they disbanded in 1913. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
