As World War II was declared on 3 September 1939 the government cancelled major sporting events.

The Football League of 1939-40 was immediately suspended, as a result of this Manchester United F.C. took part in a competition implemented by the Football League & were placed in the "Western Division", after only one season however they were then placed in the Northern Section as the competition took on a more complicated format with some of the matches counting towards two or more sections of the League and Cup competitions!!!!
