As Newton Heath's financial muscle atrophied towards the end of the 1890s, player purchases became more and more from the obscure variety. George Radcliffe was such a signing when he scribbled his name on the dotted line in November 1898. With no previous league experience, he was fated to spend the rest of the season acquainting himself with Bank Street's second string element.
He only made the first team on a couple of occasions in 1898-99, the first of which on what could be best described as the 'Day of Debuts' on January 7th: in a friendly against Manchester City, the Heathens introduced Oare at left-half, Walker at centre-half, and Radcliffe himself on the right wing. There were around 4,000 fans in the stands and most of them were jubilant at a particular moment in the first half: "Cunningham passed and Radcliffe, dashing in, banged the ball into the net amid loud cheers".
The club programme pressed for George's inclusion in forthcoming fixtures, but there was no budging regular incumbent Willie Bryant from the outside-right berth. Subsequently, Radcliffe only played once more - a 5-0 thrashing of Luton Town in a Division Two fixture on April 12th, 1899. In the summer, he moved to New Brighton Tower and reportedly shaped well on his bow in a friendly against Birkenhead on September 23rd, but he never made their league team. He then moved to Nelson for 1902-03. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
