In reserve team football, S. Prince was king - he adorned Newton Heath's left flank throughout 1893-94 and found the net at least 12 times. In senior circles, however, his prominence was so low that even his first initial - let alone name - was never established. In the history books he is listed as 'D', in the papers he was commonly identified as 'W', and in the official documentations following his signing on August 23rd, 1893, he was marked down as 'S'.
Prince was understudy to Jack Peden during 1893-94, finally making his debut on November 4th when three Heathens were missing through suspension. He did himself justice against Darwen, creating many dangerous attacks, and being one of the pick of the Mancunians. Further player trouble - most of the Heathens were busy in court - provided him with another first team opportunity on March 1st, 1894, then he enjoyed three outings in April, creating the winner in a friendly against Ardwick then getting on the scoresheet himself versus Bury in the Palatine League on April 16th.
This proved to be Prince's last appearance for Heath as he joined Rossendale that summer. He later turned out for Heywood in 1897-98 having converted to defence. No picture available.
