The unlikeliest of players led Newton Heath's attack in their final season of 1901-02. Steve Preston was discovered by chance when club official Fred Palmer stepped out of the New Inn, Ancoats, one Sunday morning and spotted him excelling in a local park kick about. Steve was promptly thrust into the lineup for the opening fixture against Gainsborough Trinity... and he bagged two goals.
The young lad continued in the same vein, netting 11 goals in 29 league matches to finish as Newton Heath's last ever top scorer. Steve also scored the winning goal in the Manchester Senior Cup semi-final tussle with Bolton Wanderers before the club went on to win the trophy. Unfortunately for him, when the club changed to Manchester United, he found himself behind several new expensive recruits.
Still, Preston remained a crowd favourite, his eventual reemergence with United greeted with loud cheers on October 4th, 1902, and he responded by netting a brace. He added one more goal in his final appearance in January 1903 but, when the club signed yet another striker in February (Tom Arkesden), it was time for him to move to Stockport County.
Steve scored on his debut for County against Blackpool before adding two more in the remaining ten matches of the season. He signed off with a goal against his namesakes, Preston North End, in April to complete an impressive statistic: he had scored in both his first and last outings for Newton Heath, Manchester United and Stockport!
In the 1903 close season, Steve made a welcome return to Bank Street but, despite remaining prolific with United's reserve eleven, he could not force his way back into the first team again. In September 1904, he was spotted in Hyde St. George's team where he spent the next three years. Football was the last thing on his mind a decade later when he joined the 12th Battalion of Lancashire Fusiliers during the Great War. Preston gave his life for his country in September 1916 during the Battle of Machukovo. Stephen Preston lost his life whilst serving in the 12th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers during WW1. Stephen lost his life serving his Country during the Battle of Machukovo. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
