Biography

William George O'Brien was not a typical footballer. A thriving businessman, he remained an amateur during his playing career and only turned out whenever his business affairs allowed him to. His uncle, Peter, was the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland but George hailed from the Everton district and suitably served the Toffees in 1900-01. He was exclusively attached to their reserve team and actually helped them win the Lancashire Combination that season, bagging a belated medal for his efforts.
The 5' 10", 12st flankman was educated at Ampleforth College as well as St. Francis Xavier's College, serving the latter's football team - Old Xaverians - and representing the County Palatine.
When Newton Heath were declared bankrupt in January 1902 and the players - led by Harry Stafford - reformed the club a few weeks later, they could not afford to buy any players. Everton were kind enough to release O'Brien who, as an amateur, obviously required no wages. In the event, he only got to assist the Heathens once, and it was a poignant match: against Middlesbrough on April 7th, a fixture that was postponed the moment the club was initially wound up in January.
O'Brien certainly enjoyed his solitary outing - he earned the penalty kick from which Fred Erentz pulled one goal back, then he himself went narrowly wide just before fulltime, as Heath lost 1-2. When the season finished and new financial backers came on board, George was kept on... and on... and on: he never played for Manchester United but they retained his registration until 1911!. George was the last player ever signed by Newton Heath - Thanks to the tireless work of Charbel Boujaoude for extra info on George O'Brien. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
