Biography
When the Newton Heath playing squad returned for pre-season training on Monday, August 13th, 1900, there were several new faces, particularly in the forward department. One newcomer was Reginald Openshaw Lawson, a clever inside-right, and the proof of his cleverness was that he attended Cheshire College en route to becoming a school teacher.
Lawson also excelled on the football field, first surfacing with his parish's side, Halliwell St. Paul's, then with his college team for whom he once scored 20 goals in one season, mainly as skipper. Reg then briefly assisted Southport Central before spending a big chunk of 1899-00 with South Shore in the Lancashire League. He had netted five goals by the time the club was amalgamated with Blackpool.
That was when Lawson arrived at Newton Heath, who fielded him in the three opening matches of the 1900-01 season. However, with "scientific play yet at a discount", he failed to score or impress and he was dropped from the first team. Reg returned in a friendly on November 3rd then even grabbed a goal a fortnight later as Heath thrashed Rochdale in the Manchester Senior Cup, but this proved to be his last appearance in the club's white top.
Lawson then spent two years at Bolton, half as an amateur, half as a professional, but could not get into the first team either way. Thus, in September 1903, he returned to Southport Central where he enjoyed better times over the next three seasons. Spring of 1905 was the highlight: firstly, the papers noted his "great improvement, his principal characteristic being a desire to work"; and, secondly, he obtained one of the goals as Southport beat Everton's reserves 2-1 to win the 1904-05 Lancashire Cup and make up for losing the previous year's final to Blackburn.
Once described as being able "to jog serenely through ninety hard and grueling minutes", Lawson had to settle to jogging in Central's reserve side for most of 1905-06, though he did enjoy the day he smashed a hat-trick past Chorley in March 1906. He left the club that summer. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
