Newton Heath went for quantity, if not necessarily quality, in preparation for the 1898-99 campaign. As many as seven new men were signed on, including Welshman John Owen Jones. The papers stated that he was 5'8" tall and weighed 11st 6lb. And there was one more thing: since another Jones (Robert) was obtained at that time, Owen was promptly nicknamed "Chorley" Jones, in reference to his previous club. That was one of his previous clubs. He had began playing with his hometown side, Bangor, then joined Crewe Alexandra in October 1894, eventually arriving at Chorley three years later.
The striker impressed in Newton Heath's practice matches, as well as in a pre-season friendly when he notched the only goal of the game against his previous employers. So much so that Jones was the only one of the seven new purchases to make the lineup for the first league match of the season - against Gainsborough Trinity on September 3rd, 1898.
Two games later, however, his Bank Street stay was brought to an immediate end. Heath's directorate had a habit of suspending its own players, and Owen landed on the naughty list for "neglecting orders"! It was also claimed that "he loved the ball too much", so he was sent back to Chorley in October.
Nonetheless, Owen in time managed to revive his career. He rejoined Bangor in 1899 and improved to such an extent that he won two Welsh caps in March 1901: first versus Scotland, then versus Ireland when he grabbed the game's only goal. In 1901, after a quick stop at Earlestown, Jones shacked up with Stalybridge Rovers where he eventually finished his career. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
