Jamie Higson achieved a special feat the moment he joined Newton Heath: the inside-forward was the only player signed after the club was reformed by the Harry Stafford-led players and before Mr. Davies' takeover leading to the subsequent name change to Manchester United. This was the time the club was at its lowest ebb, the press box at Bank Street oscillating on four props, and the players reduced to hanging about the turnstiles on match day to see what prospect they had of drawing wages.
His move took place in early February 1902, and he was just about the best they could afford in those dark few months. Higson was a local youth who was the star of Manchester Wednesday FC, who had just won the Manchester Wednesday League. Newton Heath's own director, Mr. Harry Jones, was this league's president and his connections obviously helped bring this deal about.
Higson's first game for Heath was in a reserve fixture versus Glossop on February 15th. A well-built man, he "gave every satisfaction" as he grabbed a goal in the 2-1 triumph. He was consequently given a run out in the first team, starting with the Lincoln City tussle on March 1st, and he continued to earn rave reviews: "Higson played superbly. He delivers splendid centres and can show a fine turn of speed".
In all, Jamie played five league matches for the Heathens and obtained one goal - versus Barnsley - but, once the pauper Heathens became the rich Manchester United, they could afford international class forwards, and Higson drifted back into the Manchester Wednesday League, where he was still spotted playing in 1904-05, for Newton Heath Wednesday. No picture available - James was the last player signed by Newton Heath before 23/04/1902. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
