Despite a rather fleeting stay with Newton Heath, James Hendry provided a permanent contribution to Manchester United's history. The Scottish left winger signed on with the Heathens at the end of their first month in the First Division, on September 29th, 1892, from Scottish outfit, Alloa Athletic. Initially expected to start against WBA on October 8th, he was fated to stay back in his hometown due to the serious illness of a relative.
Consequently, his introduction came a week later when the still winless Heath hosted Wolverhampton. Within a minute, Hendry shot the ball in, which galvanized his teammates no end, and they ended up gaining their first ever league victory. In fact, it was a 10-1 victory and, so emphatic was the scoreline that, it remains the club's biggest league win 125 years later!
Alas, it could only get worse after such an astounding start, and he was curiously only able to add one more appearance for the Heathens - a trip to Sheffield Wednesday the following weekend when they lost to a last-minute goal. An agent named Mr. Tobbin had secured his move south and, by November, James was back in Alloa, apparently "the life of a pro not what the agent generally represented it to be". No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
