Biography
Arriving from hometown club Egerton, Jack Grundy first appeared for Newton Heath on April 11th , 1895, helping the reserves defeat Berry's Association 4-2 from inside-left. His "grand work" produced the third goal. However, unable to break into the first team, he left to Halliwell Rovers later that August, making his debut in the Lancashire League against Chorley on September 7th.
For three years Grundy starred for Rovers, plundering the goals at a regular rate. Then, in 1899, another Lancashire League outfit, Wigan County, went on a glitzy shopping spree. They bought Grundy, his Halliwell teammate Dick Smith (also an ex-Heathen) after Rovers disbanded, as well as John Cunningham (yet another ex-Heath forward). Smith, incidentally, rejoined the Mancunians in February 1900, and Grundy followed suit two months later.
In his second spell at Bank Street, Jack finally got a first-team opportunity - on the last day of the season. With Heath losing 0-1 to Chesterfield, he equalized then created the winner for fellow trialist, Holt. This impressive display guaranteed Grundy a starting role at the beginning of 1900-01. He appeared on the left wing in seven consecutive fixtures, scoring twice. His goal versus Middlesbrough greatly appealed to the journalist: "Grundy nipped the ball off the defender's toe then banged it into the net at a speed that hardly gave the goalkeeper time to see it".
By December, however, Jack had lost his place to new signing 'Cud' Fisher. He hung around till February 1901 but, once Dick Smith transferred to Bolton Wanderers, Jack followed him yet again for a "very nominal fee", the two teaming up for the fifth time in a row! Alas, they had to settle on renewing their partnership in Bolton's reserve side, for neither one played competitively for the Wanderers. Lo and behold, when 1901-02 kicked-off, the two were side by side again, this time with Wigan United in the Lancashire League. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
