Biography
It was said Wilson Greenwood was past his best when he arrived at Newton Heath, but it is hard to imagine he would have left a decent impression even if he had served the club at his peak. For the 5'6" winger experienced a rather mediocre career throughout.
Starting out with Burnley Blue Star, he subsequently served Brierfield and Accrington before breaking into the Football League with Sheffield United in January 1895... for one game! Back he went into the non-league scene with Rossendale in 1895-96, Rochdale Athletic in 1896-97, and Southern League side Warmley in 1897-98.
Greenwood finally found his way back into the Football League with Grimsby Town. He enjoyed a stellar 1898-99 term, netting 11 goals in 31 matches, followed by a less productive two goals in 26 games the following year.
Newton Heath signed the aging winger in October 1900 and he made his bow in a friendly against his previous employers, Grimsby, on the 16th. He even scored once in a 2-1 win. In the League, however, Wilson was a big letdown. He played against Walsall, Burton Swifts and Small Heath, switching between the left and right flank, but all to minimal effect. Relevant match report snippets include "not conductive to good combination", "blundered with one shot", and "badly missed a cross".
The final damning verdict came from a Grimsby journalist: "There was no regret when Greenwood went to Newton Heath and, after Saturday's show, it is clear he would not find a place in some of the local teams". Greenwood proved him wrong, though, finding a place in... Burnley's reserves! He first appeared for them on October 26th, 1901, even scoring versus Rossendale United, but finally called it a day shortly afterwards. No picture available.
