John "Jock" Graham was big in Blyth - both physically and in status. Nearly 6 feet tall and weighing 12st 10lbs, he was considered a big lad for the time, and "he was not afraid of using his weight", no matter where selected by Blyth FC. And he was selected everywhere... to varying degrees of success: at full-back he was "faulty", at centre-forward he used "bad judgment", but at half-back he "excelled". In fact, he excelled enough that, in December 1892, he was called up to the Northumberland representative side to face Cleveland's XI.
John's teammate at Blyth was Joe Cassidy, who joined Newton Heath in March 1893, and John followed in November after a "satisfactory" trial. Perhaps the Heathens were desperate - three of their players had been suspended following an ill-tempered game at Burnley. So, Graham filled in for Donaldson in a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton on November 11th, but did not impress. Neither did he impress in another three league matches spread out until mid-January 1894.
However, John excelled for the reserves, scoring at a rate of a goal every two games, including against Bolton in a Manchester Senior Cup outing in which the second eleven stepped in for the regulars. Eventually, Graham switched back to centre-half during the course of 1893-94 and it was in this position that he rejoined Blyth after spending the summer back home in Motherwell.
If anything, John returned a "quicker" player after his First Division exploits and had "apparently learned some professional wrinkles and made advantageous uses of them". He actually became Blyth's skipper in 1896-97 but left in March 1897 and settled in Wallsend where he worked as a coal trimmer.
