Although born in Manchester, Joseph William Fall grew up in Redcar, West Riding, because his family owned the Jolly Sailor Hotel in town. In his teens, he excelled in the various athletic sports in the area but, despite his speed, he made his footballing career as a goalkeeper. Joe served several sides in the region such as Redcar Juniors in 1890, Redcar FC in 1891, and Whitby in 1892.
Midway through 1892-93, Fall reached the higher level of the Northern League when he signed for Middlesbrough FC, and not Middlesbrough Ironopolis, as history had previously claimed. This was just a brief stepping stone, for he was lured back to Manchester in the summer of 1893 to play for Newton Heath. A strapping fellow of nearly six feet tall, Joe became Heath's keeper for most of 1893-94. This strangely gave him the honour of being the goalkeeper with the most First Division appearances in Heath's history... with a total of just 23. In all, Fall played 39 matches that season, culmination with a starring role in the test match against Liverpool on April 28th, albeit in a 0-2 defeat.
However, the club soon decided new signing William Douglas would be first-choice keeper from now on, and they placed Fall on the transfer list with a hefty £60 fee on his head. Unsurprisingly, there were no takers, though Burnley made some inquiries. Instead, the Mancunian dropped into the non-league scene where no transfer fees were needed. He played for South Shore in the winter of 1894 then spent the spring of 1895 with Kettering.
At last, Newton Heath relented in the 1895 close season and reduced his transfer fee to £20. This was good enough for Small Heath (Birmingham), though Fall himself apparently was not - they only used him in two league matches in 1895-96. Inevitably, Joe was on the move again in 1896, joining Altrincham. Picture thanks to the hard & appreciated work of Charbel Boujaoude. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
