"A man of many parts, who can occupy any forward position" - That is how William Dunn was described during his playing career, which does not really shed a light on how well he could occupy said positions. In truth, Dunn was mostly of reserve-level calibre, and that was where he showed his best form for Newton Heath.
He had started his career with South Bank in 1894, appropriately in their second team. Eventually he progressed to their Northern League squad before eventually joining Blyth FC. The ever-improving Dunn impressed enough to seal a move to Manchester in the summer of 1897. William was put in the starting lineup in the season's opening three fixtures, operating at inside-right.
In November, he got back into the first team but, this time, on the wing - once on the right followed by ten matches on the left, in all competitions. All his outings had one thing in common: he did not get on the scoresheet! Part of his struggles may be attributed to a knee injury he picked up on New Year's Day against Burton Swifts, but it was obvious Dunn lacked the necessary quality to excel at Newton Heath. Accordingly, he was transferred to Reading in July 1898 where he stayed for one year. In August 1899, Dunn was back with South Bank after a two-year absence, having been reinstated as an amateur.
