Biography
John Cunningham played for so many clubs it was only a matter of time before he ended up at Newton Heath. A Glaswegian forward who could play all across the front line, he began with Benburb FC and had a month trial at Burnley in November 1889. This was followed by a short stint at Glasgow Hibernians, from where he moved to Celtic in 1890.
Although Cunningham stayed nearly two years with the Celts, he only made the first team eight times, having had to wait till April 1891 to make his bow. In all he only scored once for Celtic - against Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Then he paid Partick Thistle a short visit in 1892, as well as Hearts, for whom he appeared in one league game on October 15th of the same year, on the day Newton Heath recorded their greatest ever win - 10-0 against Wolverhampton.
Ibrox was Cunningham's next destination but he did not make Rangers' first team and, by the end of 1892, he had shacked up with Glasgow Thistle. Finally, in August 1893, he found himself a permanent home: Preston North End. For four years he ran down Preston's left wing, tallying 51 league outings and helping them win the Lancashire Senior Cup in 1895.
Sheffield United eventually bought him for the 1897-98 season, and his seven goals in 24 matches went a long way to lead United to the First Division title. Thus, it was a great coup when Aston Villa signed John for £125 in August 1898. They did go on to win the championship themselves in 1898-99, but John was long gone. Their star forward Devey returned to fitness thus making the new signing redundant. Cunningham only donned Villa's colours in a friendly versus Walsall before he was sold at cut price in October... to Newton Heath.
John made his debut for the Heathens on November 5th, 1898 against Grimsby Town. For four months he appeared all across the attack, scoring three goals in 15 league matches, on each occasion his goals leading to big victories. Unfortunately, his Heathen career came to an abrupt end in March 1899 when the directors suspended both him and fellow striker Henry Boyd for turning up to training apparently under the influence of alcohol.
Cunningham was off to Wigan County in the Lancashire League where he spent the 1899-00 campaign. His highlight came on September 30th, 1899, as Wigan thrashed Swinton 8-0 in the FA Cup. John smashed three goals in quick succession. The club, however, folded in June 1900 leaving Cunningham with just enough time to serve one more club: Barrow. He actually appeared in their first ever fixture - against Blackpool in 1901.
