Early Life and Beginnings
Born in Dublin in 23/02/1919, Carey developed a passion for the game at an early age. He honed his talents in local clubs, Home Farm and Dublin county team (Gaelic football) where his technical ability and understanding of the game quickly set him apart from his peers. His early promise led to opportunities at higher levels of competition, paving the way for a distinguished professional career.

Club Career
At the start of the 1936/37 season, Carey joined St James's Gate he was eventually spotted my Manchester United's scouting system after Billy Behan had recommended him to chief scout Louis Rocca. Carey moved to Manchester United for a then record fee for a League of Ireland player of £250, he made his debut on 23/09/1937 v Southampton at Old Trafford in League Division Two. At United, he became a central figure, admired for his vision, precise passing, and tireless work rate. His ability to read the game and orchestrate play helped stabilize and inspire the team during a crucial period in the club’s history. His performances on the pitch earned him widespread respect from teammates and supporters alike, and he is often remembered as one of the early icons of the club. Carey won the FA Cup v Blackpool in 1948 & won a Charity shield v Newcastle United in 1952, coupled with a title win in 1951/1952.

Johnny played in 9 different positions during his time at Manchester United, even playing a match as goalkeeper during a 2-2 draw at Roker Park v Sunderland on 18/02/1953. With both Manchester United goalkeepers absent, Ray Wood with RAF & Jack Crompton taken ill in morning, captain Johnny Carey, took the opportunity to be custodian for the day.

International Career
On the international stage, Johnny Carey proudly represented Ireland (FAI), League of Ireland XI, Ireland (IFA) & Europe XI. His performances for the national team further cemented his reputation as one of the finest Irish footballers of his generation. His flair and dedication brought a distinctive style to the international game, inspiring both contemporaries and future Irish players.

Later Years and Management
After hanging up his boots, Carey remained involved in football, transitioning into coaching and mentoring roles, he managed 1953-1958 Blackburn Rovers, 1955–1967 Republic of Ireland, 1958–1961 Everton, 1961–1963 Leyton Orient, 1963–1968 Nottingham Forest, & finally 1970–1971 Blackburn Rovers for a second time.

Johnny Carey passed away 23/08/1995, but his legacy endures. He is celebrated not only for his achievements on the field but also for his role as a trailblazer who opened doors for future generations of Irish footballers. His life and career remain a testament to passion, perseverance, and the unifying power of football.
