One rash moment defined James Brown's time in Manchester. The left-back had moved from Dundee Our Boys in June 1892, settled at Rose Villa on Stanley Street in Newton Heath, and got a job in the factory. But on October 15th, while representing the reserve team, he slipped while clearing the ball and accidentally kicked Darwen's Joseph Aspden in the stomach. The young lad suffered from internal bleeding and died eight days later. Although the jury turned in a verdict of 'Accidental Death', Brown seemingly never recovered from this incident.
He had been in the lineup in Manchester United's first ever league match as well as the next five, until he was dropped to the second team for that fateful encounter. Thereafter, he was only able to make the first team on one occasion and, much like the previous six, James could not savour a victory. Instead, he languished in the reserves, though he was often called up for first-team friendlies, such as his farewell outing against Ardwick in April 1893 when he marked the occasion with an own goal.
In 1893, when Dundee Our Boys merged with town rivals East End to form Dundee FC, the new team took their old vice-captain back to Scotland and he was again present in the lineup for their inaugural Scottish League fixture, a 3-3 draw with Rangers. He appeared in 13 out of Dundee's 18 matches during 1893-94, scoring one goal, superfluously in a 3-10 defeat to St. Mirren! He was not retained for the following campaign.
