Stalybridge, Stalybridge, Stalybridge - that was where William Brooks was born, where Newton Heath bought him from, and where they sold him. Twice. He was originally called up from Rovers in February 1896 for a trial but he obviously did not leave a good impression, for he was initially rejected.
Two and a half years later, the Heathens were finally convinced, and they snapped Brooks up for the 1898-99 campaign. He was a 5' 10", 11st 4lb, centre-forward who enjoyed a dream Football League debut - he bagged a brace in a 6-1 destruction of Loughborough. Although he found the net in the next match as well, his general reluctance to shoot saw him demoted to the second team.
After a mere five outings for Heath's first team, William moved back across town and rejoined Rovers. It was not a happy return, initially, mind: Brooks slipped within fifteen minutes of his return against Haydock and had to be carried off the field. No picture available - William Brooks has a 100% strike Record for Newton Heath. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
