Nominally a reserve player, William Booth enjoyed just two outings in Newton Heath's first team, and they came in the space of five days in December 1900. Signed the previous month from local side Edge Lane FC of the Manchester Federation League, he was given a trial on the left flank on Boxing Day. The Heathens won 4-0, though the trialist did not get on the scoresheet.
On the 29th, he was more involved in another victory, 3-0 over Glossop. The Manchester Courier stated he had opened the scoring himself, but Heath's official programme - which should know best - credited that strike to Tom Leigh from a move that began when Booth volleyed a clearance off his own goal-line!
William stayed on at Bank Street, appearing frequently for the reserves until the end of 1901-02. When the club changed their name to Manchester United that summer, there was a 'Booth' on the books of the new team, but that was Herbert, a new half-back from Rossall Mission FC. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
