A product of Inverkeithing Thistle - a Fife side - James Bain was signed by Dundee in March 1899 after impressing in a junior international trial game: "Bain proved himself masterly at centre-forward and, despite the rather forcible treatment he received, managed to put in a fair afternoon's work". He made his debut for Dundee on April Fool's Day against Celtic in an end-of-season Eastern League fixture.
When 1899-00 began, Bain was in the Dundee 'A' team but still attracted the attentions of Newton Heath, who had a habit of signing Dundee players. He was given a fortnight's trial in September 1899 to prove himself. The tall, speedy and courageous striker excelled on his debut, opening the scoring as Heath beat Loughborough Town 4-0 in addition to passing nicely and creating many openings.
However, after a 0-0 draw at Burton Swifts in his second outing when he did not particularly distinguish himself, the Heathens decided not to retain James' services. By mid-October he was back in Dundee, playing and scoring for the 'A' team. Tellingly, he never made their first team in the Scottish League, only in the less competitive Eastern League.
