John "Jack" Whitney was Failsworth's skipper when Newton Heath signed him in the first week of November 1895. The left-back or occasional left-half would go on to have one of the strangest careers in the history of the club, for three main reasons.
Firstly, from his debut for the second string against Manchester City on November 9th, Whitney would be mostly confined to the reserves, whom he served regularly until April 1903, by which time the club had changed its name into Manchester United. At that time, this made him the second longest-serving player at Bank Street after Walter Cartwright.
Secondly, Jack represented Heath's first team in three league matches and, while the first two were back to back against Burton Swifts (February 29th, 1896) and Rotherham Town (March 7th), the last game took place against Walsall... five years later!
And, thirdly, all three matches were characterized by desperate lineup alterations, particularly in goal. In the first two matches, an outfield player stood between the sticks (Perrins then Cartwright), and in the final one, the opposite happened: two goalkeepers were used, Garvey playing in goal and Whitehouse appearing at inside-left!
Whitney lived on Montague Street in Manchester all this time, supplementing his footballing career by working as a machine fitter. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
