Standing at 5'10" and weighing nearly 12st, Bob Turner made a formidable centre-half, but his regular position was at left-back. Originally he played for non-league outfits Red Rock and Hereford Thistle before joining Southern League side Gravesend United in May 1897. He only made seven appearances for them during 1897-98 yet earned a move to Newton Heath in May 1898.
Bob was largely cast as a back-up player at Bank Street. His bow came on October 8th when injuries to Collinson and Draycott provided openings in the lineup to face Burslem Port Vale. He only played one more league game - versus Loughborough in February 1899 - and a handful of appearances in friendlies and local competitions before moving on to Brighton United in the summer.
After a mere three Southern League outings, Turner was transferred to Thames Ironworks (now West Ham United) in December 1899, which was just as well - Brighton United disbanded in March 1900. That was the month Bob played his last match for West Ham as, for the next few months, he struggled to make the first team.
Eventually, he joined Fulham in December 1900 and, by the end of 1900-01, he had played 11 games for them, which was more than he had played for his previous three clubs combined! A spell in Ireland followed as Turner served Glentoran from July to December 1901, before his four goals helped Cray Wanderers win the Kent League title of 1901-02.
The much-travelled Turner continued his travels, joining his fifth Southern League club: Watford, at the start of 1902-03. However, barely two matches later, he was suspended by his own directors, and he had no better option than to return to his hometown in Lancashire in October 1902 and sign for Rossendale United, where he eventually finished his career.
