No Manchester Senior Cup final was complete during the 1880s without John Mitchell at full-back. He represented Newton Heath in the competition's first six finals, from 1885 to 1890, earning four winners' medals in the process, more than any other Heathen.
Mitchell had begun his career with Doncaster Rovers... from Day One: he was their left-back when they kicked their very first ball, on October 3rd, 1879. By 1883 he had become captain, and he performed so well against Newton Heath on February 7th, 1885, that the Mancunians promptly signed him up. He made his Heath debut the following weekend, against Eccles in the Manchester Cup, suitably enough. He was also given a job at the railway in his field as a joiner.
John would go on to play over 200 matches of all manner for the North Road outfit, equally effectively at right or left-back. Although he had scored the occasional goal for Doncaster, he only found the net four times with the Heathens. And one of those - the last (against Witton in September 1890) - was a fluke. He lumped the ball forward from the middle of the pitch only for it to sail all the way in. Incidentally, Heath's other goal that day was obtained by William Tait directly from a corner!
Mitchell's class was evident in that he was called up for the Manchester and District representative team three times between 1885 and 1887. That said, his stay with Heath was not a continuous one. In the 1888 close season, he joined Bolton Wanderers and played in their first two Football League fixtures. Two defeats later, however, he rejoined Heath in the Football Combination.
Eventually, his time in Manchester came to an end in 1891 when he joined Heywood and was swiftly installed as skipper. In time he retired and moved back to Doncaster in the mid-1890s. However, he made a brief comeback into the game by hooking up with Doncaster Thursday FC in 1896. Eventually Mitchell found employment with Doncaster Tramways where he worked for decades, even turning out in a football benefit game for them against Doncaster Police in March 1913.
Sadly, John met with a tragic end in July 1938, aged 77. Bedridden for a while at his place of residence on St. Ursula's Street in Doncaster, he succumbed to his smoking habit: blind in one eye, he attempted to put out his cigarette in a bedside bin but accidentally tossed it onto a stack of clothes lying on the floor, thus burning himself to death. Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless researching effort & the correct information on John Mitchell. John blind in one eye, tragically lost his life at the age of 77 in a fire in Doncaster.
