There was much excitement when James Hopkins made his debut for Newton Heath on March 18th, 1899. Left-back Fred Erentz was back to face New Brighton Tower after recovering from the flu, Matt Gillespie returned to the lineup after the directors lifted his suspension, and Hopkins himself was being introduced having signed from Horwich earlier in the week.
Previously a Berry's Association player and latterly with Horwich, James assumed the inside-right berth in place of the out-of-form Jimmy Collinson, but the newcomer struggled too. Betraying a lack of the desired speed and craft, he only impressed on one occasion when his splendid shot extended the opposition goalkeeper. To make matters worse, when the visitors grabbed two late goals to inflict Heath's first home league reverse in nearly a year and a half, a riot erupted after the match! This unsavoury match proved to be Hopkins' solitary outing for Heath. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
