The 1899-1900 season was the highlight of John Edward Holt's career. A local lad, he starred on the right wing for Newton Heath Athletic, eventually scoring one of the goals as they thrashed Freetown 6-0 in the Manchester Junior Cup final. He was also selected to represent the Manchester League XI in an end-of-season exhibition game against that league's champions, Tonge FC, on April 28th, 1900.
However, Edward had something better to do that afternoon: turn out on trial for Newton Heath in the last match of their Division Two program. The Heathens were looking for a permanent replacement for Willie Bryant, who had been transferred to Blackburn, and they selected Holt to face Chesterfield. Not only did the trialist provide the perfect cross from which fellow debutant, Jack Grundy, equalize, but Holt himself also went on to score the winning goal later.
Peculiarly, it was Grundy who was offered terms with the Heathens for 1900-01 while Holt was rejected, as a better option in Everton's Alf Schofield became available for the right flank. Edward returned to play for Newton Heath Athletic, whom he also served at cricket in the summers. Confusingly, he once again became associated with a team called Newton Heath... without changing clubs: when the Heathens morphed into Manchester United in 1902, Newton Heath Athletic dropped their prefix and took on the name 'Newton Heath' thereafter! 100% strike record - No picture available.
