Mancunian by birth, William Gyves was living with some Irish relatives on Dean Lane in the city when he established himself as the Newton Heath reserve team's goalkeeper in 1890-91. His only moment in the limelight came on October 25th, 1890, when the second eleven deputized in an FA Cup tie against Bootle's equivalents. Gyves did not disgrace himself, letting in only one goal as the Heathens bowed out of the cup without much regret.
William later served a local side called Newton Heath Wednesday in the mid-1890s as he continued to dwell in Manchester. Originally employed as a calenderer, he later kept a beerhouse at 6 Dean Lane, off Oldham Road in Newton Heath. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
