In an era when tracing a Newton Heath second string lineup was a rare occurrence, Charlie Felton's name popped up about 60 times. That told the story of the club's 'eternal reserve', the man who served the Heathens for eight long years, which was enough time for him to turn out in every position on the pitch bar one - and that was at centre-forward, for he even played in goal. Felton began his career in his home town with Handsworth Oakfield before playing in Birmingham Excelsior's half-back line at the age of 17 during 1882-83. In 1884, he crossed town to Small Heath Alliance (now Birmingham City) where his 3-year stay included a run to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1886. A year later, Charles switched 'Heathens', joining the Mancunian version and signing on as one of the club's first batch of professionals. He immediately impressed his new teammates, at least at Newton Heath's 7th annual sports in August 1887, when he won the members' race. On the football pitch it was a different matter, Felton being cast as a reserve player, filling in whenever, and wherever, necessary. His bow, for instance, was at left-back in an 8-1 tonking of Notts Jardines on November 19th, 1887. Over the years, he played the odd Football Alliance game, as well as one FA Cup tie and the 1891 Manchester Senior Cup final. Charles also turned out for Heath's cricket team in the summers and, long after representing the second string for the last time in the Spring of 1895, he continued to live on Robert Street in Newton Heath as he worked as a house painter. Felton eventually passed away and was buried in Newton Heath on the 7th of September, 1918. Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless efforts & the correct information on Charles Felton.
