Despite a successful season with Newton Heath, it is at Stoke that Alf Edge left a more lasting memory. Initially starting out with local side Goldenhill Wanderers, he joined Stoke in 1884 and gradually proved himself a skillful inside-forward who was quick over short distances, worked tirelessly, and packed a decent shot.
One of the club's initial batch of professionals, Edge created a cup record that still stands at Stoke to this day: 5 goals in one FA Cup tie against Caernarvon in 1886-87. In 1888, he was present in the club's first Football League match - against WBA - and, when they were demoted at the end of the campaign, he helped them bounce back promptly as they won the Football Alliance in 1890-91. Alf was top scorer with 12 goals in 22 matches.
Edge stayed in the Alliance, however, in 1891-92, joining Newton Heath for £100. He scored on his bow against Port Vale then added a hat-trick against Bootle in mid-September. He was also prolific in Heath's FA Cup campaign, tallying 3 goals in as many games. By the end of the season, Alf had amassed 18 goals in 44 games of all manner, assisting the Mancunians to second place in the table.
Surprisingly, the 11st 8lb striker again refrained from accompanying Heath into the Football League, signing instead for Notts Jardines. However, as this transaction took place during the playing season, it was in contravention of the rules. The FA blocked it and banned Edge until October 11th, 1892. Thus, he ended up rejoining Stoke but only played one league game for them... an infamous one: when Newton Heath visited the Potteries with only 10 men in January 1893 and lost 1-7! Alf even scored one.
In August 1893, Alf headed to Northwich Victoria, then a league team, and played thrice then returned to Manchester, joining Ardwick. As City's forerunners only used him once (curiously against Northwich), he continued his wandering path to finish 1893-94 with Macclesfield. Six games and two goals later, Alf realized it was time to retire and concentrate on managing the Moss Rose Tavern thereafter. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
