Forever known as Jack's younger brother, Roger Doughty may have always been a step behind, but he was a star player in his own right. If anything, he proved his abilities in two - rather than one - positions, first excelling as a striker and, latterly, as a halfback.
Roger first saw the light in 1868, whether in Cannock Chase (Staffordshire) or Denbigh (North Wales) it is not certain, for both his - and his brother's - vital stats differ from one census to another, the relevant information probably falsified to allow the two to represent Wales at international level. With an Irish father and a Welsh mother, Roger grew up at 33 Crane Street in Ruabon and worked as a horse driver in the coal pits whereas Jack was a miner.
The younger Doughty broke into Druids' first team in the mid-1880s and helped them win the Welsh Cup in 1885 and 1886. He was slow in following Jack to Newton Heath, his first game coming on December 11th, 1886. His next appearance came in the Manchester Senior Cup semi-final the following April when he struck the only goal of the game against Ten Acres with a late scorcher.
However, it was not until late October 1887 that Roger joined the Heathens full-time, agreeing terms of £1 a week. He quickly starred, tallying 23 goals in 35 games, including a brace in the Manchester Cup final. Operating in either inside-forward slots, he added 15 goals in 1888-89, including the Manchester Cup final again.
From 1889-90 onwards, though, Roger was converted into a half-back, which obviously put an end to his prolific streak. He still added a Manchester Cup winners' medal and a finalists' one in the next 2 years, in addition to appearing in Heath's inaugural Football Combination then Football Alliance fixtures. From winning races in the annual pre-season sports as a youngster, he transitioned into a "glutton for work who performed his tasks effectively and with good judgment".
In 1892, Roger joined Fairfield where he was made captain. Coincidentally, his debut came against Heath when their originally scheduled opponents - Port Vale - could not turn up. After only one season, Roger moved again, this time to West Manchester, where he spent three years. Then, in 1896, he made a surprise return to Newton Heath after a dispute with West Manchester that was only resolved when the local FA ordered them to pay him 25s in back wages.
Though he was mostly a reserve team player in 1896-97, Doughty came to Heath's aid in the playoffs at the season's end, filling in for injured players in three of the four fixtures. Alas, this was his last moment in the limelight. Roger had been an international player too, making his debut in a historic match for Wales, when they thrashed Ireland 11-0 in 1888 - he nabbed two goals and his brother got four! Roger also faced Scotland that year as well as Canada in an unofficial 1891 international. He was only 46 years old when he passed away in December 1914 while still living in Newton Heath, at 455 Moston Lane.
Roger is the younger brother of John Doughty. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
