Biography
Karl Darlow was born in Northampton, England, on 8 October 1990. A composed and experienced goalkeeper, he developed through the Nottingham Forest youth system before beginning a professional career that would take him to Newcastle United, Hull City, Leeds United and eventually Manchester United.
Darlow made his senior debut while on loan at Newport County during the 2010/11 season and later gained further first-team experience with Walsall. He returned to Nottingham Forest and established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2012/13 campaign. His consistent performances in the Championship attracted the attention of Newcastle United, who signed him in August 2014 before allowing him to remain at Forest on loan for the rest of that season.
After arriving permanently at St James’ Park in 2015, Darlow competed with several goalkeepers for a place in the Newcastle side. He played an important role during the 2016/17 season, making 34 league appearances as Rafael Benítez’s team won the Championship title and secured an immediate return to the Premier League. Darlow went on to represent Newcastle on 100 occasions in all competitions, including 52 appearances in the Premier League.
In January 2023, he joined Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season. Darlow impressed during his 12 Championship appearances and subsequently completed a permanent transfer to Leeds United in July 2023.
Initially providing competition within the Leeds goalkeeping department, Darlow became increasingly important to the side. He started the final seven league matches of the 2024/25 campaign, winning six of them as Leeds secured the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. During the following season, he made 22 top-flight appearances and helped the club retain its Premier League status. He left Elland Road in July 2026 after playing 38 competitive matches for Leeds.
Although born in England, Darlow qualified to represent Wales through his maternal grandfather, former Welsh international forward Ken Leek. He made his senior international debut in September 2024, helping Wales record a 2–1 victory away to Montenegro. Darlow subsequently established himself as the country’s first-choice goalkeeper and had collected 15 senior caps by the time he joined Manchester United.
Darlow signed for Manchester United on 14 July 2026 following the expiration of his Leeds contract. He agreed a deal running until June 2028, with the option of an additional year, and was allocated the number 12 shirt. His arrival provided United with an experienced and dependable goalkeeper possessing extensive knowledge of both Premier League and Championship football.
Strong in one-on-one situations and regarded as a reliable shot-stopper, Darlow also brought maturity, professionalism and leadership to the United goalkeeping group. His move to Old Trafford represented a new chapter in a career built upon patience, resilience and consistent performances whenever called upon.
