From 1886-87 to 1890-91, Herbert Dale's name appeared sporadically in Newton Heath's reserve side. He could play in the half-back line as well as in the front ranks, and he was a fit athlete, judging by his frequent participation in the annual summer sport meetings held by the club during the late 1880s.
The rare instances that Herbert's name came into the limelight involved occasions when Heath's swifts side was asked to fill in for the first team. This first happened on October 25th, 1890, when Dale actually played in an FA Cup tie against Bootle, when both opponents opted to utilize their stiffs. Herbert sent a "fruitless" early shot and could not thereafter prevent a 0-1 loss. A similar situation later that season saw Dale trot out in the Manchester Cup as the reserves again stepped in for the first team in February against Hurst. Despite a 2-2 draw, the tie was awarded to Heath as they marched on to the final.
In 1892, Dale wisely called time on his average playing career and became a referee. In this occupation he achieved more fame as he officiated in the Football League throughout the 1890s. In the following decade, he concentrated more on overseeing Manchester League and Lancashire League encounters as he continued to reside in Newton Heath, at Rose Terrace on Oldham Road.
Of course, officiating could be a risky profession in those days. In April 1896, for instance, Dale was the subject of Congleton Hornets' fans' ire at the end of a match with Macclesfield. They pelted him with clods and mud then kicked him on several parts of his body for good measure. It required the police's intervention to get him to the train station without further torment. In November 1894, however, the attack was less physical and more reputational. Herbert was asked to stand before the Lancashire FA after Failsworth FC complained that he had malapportioned moneys from the Newton Heath & District competition. Dale 'emphatically denied' the charges and they were subsequently dropped.
On October 17th, 1908, Dale achieved the distinction of having refereed at all the Division One, Division Two, and Lancashire Combination grounds and, even after retirement, he was still called upon to take charge of special matches, such as when Manchester United hosted Belfast United at Old Trafford in December 1915.
Herbert passed away on Christmas Day 1925 at Ancoats Hospital in Manchester following an operation on his throat.
Herbert after retiring became a referee officiating in the Football League throughout the 1890's. In April 1896 he was attacked by Congleton Hornets fans after being pelted with sods & kicked in various parts of his body for good measure. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
