Biography

Towards the end of 1888-89, Thomas Craig's name started to appear in Newton Heath's front line. The very first occasion was a 5-0 friendly demolition of Manchester Welsh on April 29th, followed by two more appearances in the next month.
After this initial spell, he had to wait until Boxing Day to make another breakthrough, this time hitting the target as West Manchester were thrashed 7-0 in another friendly. This performance cemented Thomas' first team place for the remainder of the season. He proved himself a "rare, tricky forward" who occupied both inside-right and left positions, though he could also perform in the centre or on the left wing.
Craig enjoyed two highlights in 1889-90. On January 18th, when Newton Heath contested their first FA Cup tie, Craig stunned Preston's 'Invincibles' by scoring against them with a long, low shot in the first five minutes, thus becoming Manchester United's first ever scorer in the old trophy. Preston had won the cup the previous season without letting a goal, and they responded by surging to a 6-1 victory! His second moment in the limelight occurred on May 3rd, 1890, when he rattled a hat-trick against Royton to help secure Heath's third successive Manchester Senior Cup final triumph.
Late entries were apparently Craig's mode of operation, for his first appearance in 1890-91 did not take place until mid-October. This time he played 35 matches for the Heathens in all competitions plus friendlies, though his scoring return dropped to just seven goals, three of which came against Cambridge Trinity on New Year's Day.
Thomas moved to nearby Stockport County in 1891-92, making his debut in September. County were in the Lancashire Combination at the time and Craig appeared in 19 matches in that competition but only obtained a solitary goal. He had better luck in friendlies where he added four more goals as he often partnered his old Heathen teammate, James Gotheridge, on the wing. After that season, Craig was untraced in first class football.
