Biography
A speed merchant described as "a demon in spikes", James Connachan certainly displayed the speed with which to switch clubs during his career. The forward played for several teams in three countries, but the final verdict remained the same: "Connachan showed dash, but he was lacking in almost every other respect".
Initially he surfaced in Scottish junior football, serving Glasgow Perthshire and Duntocher Hibernian, until signing for Celtic in February 1897. James had to wait for over a year, however, for his only taste of the first team - 0-2 defeat to St. Mirren in March 1898. He eventually eschewed Celtic's reserve team to join Airdrieonians... for four days!
That was in October 1898, and it was later that same month that he arrived in Manchester. His Newton Heath bow came in a 3-2 victory over Grimsby on November 5th but, in all, he was only used four times by the Heathens, in four different positions.
Later in the same campaign, Connachan was on the move again, joining Glossop North End in February 1899. He played 11 games for them that season followed by 17 the next, scoring four goals apiece. In May 1900, he was transferred to Leicester Fosse where he enjoyed his most productive season, playing 29 matches and adding seven goals.
Next he had a trial with Nottingham Forest in August 1901 but, failing to break into the team, he was transferred to Morton that October. Five games later, he was off again, this time to Renton. His next move was a big one: to Britannia FC, in Winnipeg, Canada. He must have loved the place because, once he got one more spell in Scotland out of his system (with Dumbarton Harp in 1907-08), he emigrated to Canada for good in 1908.
Connachan lived in Winnipeg till the age of 83, first working as a packer then as a burner in the railway company. He was living at 432 Polson Avenue when he passed away in 1960. website http://www.thecelticwiki.com/ claim James was born 11 August 1876* not 29/08/1874 and a newspaper clipping was found on the internet with a poor quality image of James.
