A Mancunian of Irish descent, James Carman started his career with Tonge FC where he attracted the attentions of Darwen. They signed him in September 1895 and even played a friendly against his first club as part of the transfer. Unfortunately, it did not work out for him at Darwen, the winger deemed small (at 11st and 1lb) and lacking pace, not to mention his faulty shooting! He only played three league games for the club, scoring once - in a 4-4 draw with Newcastle.
Carman then moved to Oldham County, who were a Lancashire League outfit, for terms of £1 a week but, after two games, they upped it to £1.10 without him asking for it! In his second season there, they folded in November 1897. James actually scored in County's last ever match - a 2-8 drubbing at the hands of New Brighton!
That is when Newton Heath snapped James up. They found use for him in four games, starting against Walsall on December 11th, 1897, for the missing Willie Bryant on the right wing. In the next three games, he operated at inside-right and had an eventful outing against Burton Swifts on New Year's Day. Carman had scored his first goal for the club as Heath raced to a 4-0 lead, but their opponents did not take the beating lightly. They got rough in their play and poor James ended up with a broken ankle.
This was the last time he was seen in Newton Heath's colours, and he might have left to Middleton FC, near Tonge, in March 1898.
